The Animal Care and Use Program (ACUP) is facilitating a small workshop entitled "Aseptic Techniques (no live animals) - Sterile Field Principles, Animal and Surgeon Prep, & Management of Instruments". This class is intended to introduce the concept of sterile surgical fields and maintaining asepsis during basic surgical procedures regardless of the species. In the absence of live animals, participants will learn gloving technique, animal prepping, draping and sterilization techniques. Specific surgical procedures are not covered in this workshop. Participants are welcome to bring expired surgical supplies to supplement the class. New Investigators and laboratory personnel (technicians, students, post-docs) with no or minimal surgical experience will benefit from this short course. Since space is limited (3-4 participants/class), participants must be designated as a Surgeon (including assistants) on an approved protocol or have prior permission to register by DAR veterinary staff. Participants will receive a certificate at the completion of the class. (Note–This is not a veterinary observation class, please contact DAR if you are in need of a veterinary observation for a surgical procedure in your lab.) A reminder email will be sent about 1 week prior to the training date. You will be informed if you are on the waiting list for a particular session. If you have any questions regarding registration, please contact Elizabeth Figueroa at figueroaloe@vcu.edu

Prerequisites: Individuals must be listed or in the process to be added on an IACUC-approved protocol and be designated as a Surgeon (including assistants) or have prior permission to register by DAR veterinary staff.
