The Office of the Vice President for Research is organizing a presentation titled “Understanding Experimental and Humane Endpoints” This presentation is especially targeted to research protocols that involve procedures posing a risk of morbidity/mortality to animals, such as tumor models, infectious diseases, vaccine challenge, pain modeling, trauma, production of monoclonal antibodies, assessment of toxicologic effects, organ or system failure, or models of cardiovascular shock. Gaylen Edwards, Chair of IACUC and Professor and Head of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Georgia, will be the presenter. Highlighted topics will include: ** What types of studies require endpoint consideration in a protocol? ** How to define and address appropriate experimental and humane endpoints in your protocol. ** What are essential criteria used to establish endpoints, as described in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. ** What is the IACUC’s assessment of appropriate endpoint consideration in a protocol? ** How to train personnel in recognizing the humane endpoints. We strongly encourage all personnel to attend or at least send one person from your lab if your IACUC protocol involves the development of humane endpoints.
